The Plastiki Expedition

The Plastiki logo and one of the crew members, David, holding a cross section of the boat.

In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to give a much deserved shout out to the crew of the Plastiki Expedition, for their amazing determination to raise awareness about the glut of waste that is cloging our oceans by sailing on a catamaran constructed out of 12,500 soda bottles to the Pacific Plastic Vortex. If you don’t have an environmental cause that moves you, then look no further. After an inspired reading about their expedition in Outside Magazine during a trip to San Francisco, I have steadily been following their journey ever since and strongly suggest that you all do the same.

It takes great risk and great courage to get people to see the world differently and the entire crew of the Plastiki have embodied this in spades. Hopefully, you too will never look at a plastic bag or bottle in the same way again; may the famous quote from “The Graduate” with Dustin Hoffman ring ominously in your ears.

For my part, I always remember my canvas grocery bags and I have recycled all my plastic food containers and replaced them with glass. For more information about the harmful by-products of plastic and how they effect those of us living the gluten free life, please read my blog post titled “New TIME Article= A Must Read.”
